Inmate Correspondence
Guitar Study Description
Here is an Inmate Correspondence Guitar Study Description. This is a program offered through JSIGuitar.
There are 3 independent course studies. These course studies are the Moving Toward Great Guitar Playing Course (Beginning through Intermediate Guitar Study),
the Music Theory Course for Guitar Players (Intermediate through Advanced Guitar Study), and the Modal and Solo Composition Course for Guitar Players (Advanced Guitar Study).
There are Supplementary Lessons which compliment each of these course studies.
The Moving Toward Great Guitar Playing Course has general information on how to read charts, play scales, understand timing, play chords, build skills, and so on. All of the explanations are very thorough and easy to follow. There are six stages in the Moving Toward Great Guitar Playing Course. Each stage has 4 to 5 lessons, literature, and CD. It has been designed for beginning and intermediate players. The Course is easy to follow without the audio if the prison system does not allow CD’s.
The course is meant to be studied in conjunction with Supplementary Lessons. The Supplementary Lessons focus on particular songs, style, or topics you have an expressed interest in…(songs, solos, modes, ear training, reading, blues riffs, progressions, etc.) This course is self contained with tests and answers included at the end of each stage. Instructor support is available to answer any questions.
The Music Theory Course for Guitar Players is a college level study and requires a great deal of writing.
A certificate is issued on completion of this course. To receive a certificate from the Jim Sutton Institute of Guitar, you must complete all of the assignments with at least 70% accuracy and submit them to be checked and graded. Intervals, scale structure, chord structure, transpositions, timing, inversions, cadence, harmonic progression, and much more is covered in detail. The course takes you on a step by step progression of knowing where any one note is, to knowing how that note relates to all other notes.
This is an instructor supported study. A student can send in their questions and a response will be returned as quickly as possible.
The Modal and Solo Composition Course for Guitar Players is an advanced course and it is recommended that the student have a strong grip on chord formula theory and key signatures. Each mode is broken down and studied individually as to how it is used, when it is used, how to recognize it, and so on. Methods of how to compose original, innovative solos are explained and presented. There are 7 books but 9 sections. Books 1 and 2 are divided into two sections because of their volume.
Each study has numerous examples of chord scales, pattern riffs, rapid fire riffs, dexterity exercises, and written exercises. Everything is explained in explicit detail and demonstrated on cassette tape or CD. The Course is easy to follow without the audio if the prison system does not allow CD’s.
A certificate is issued on completion of this course. To receive a certificate, composition and comprehension assignments need to be returned to the Jim Sutton Institute of Guitar for grading and comment.
This is an instructor supported study for advanced and professional guitarists.
